session 2 . Criticism, media and the role of visual culture
Elane Ribeiro Peixoto (Federal University of Brasilia)
The intertwinement of photography and cinema with criticism of architecture and urbanism are the interests of the participants of this session. In their discourses, static or moving images are organized in narratives manipulated by hands and minds often invisible to readers of journals and newspapers and the audience of cinemas. However, the narratives studied by each participant do not follow one sole path. They affirm either the glamour of modern architecture, or the epopee of the construction of cities, or the subjectivities that trespass the architecture that is not yet a city. Thus, Júnia Mortimer, Ciro Miguel, André Costa and Liz Sandoval scrutinise the interplay of images, its subjection to the interests of authors and editors, but also the unpredictability and rebellion of photographers and filmmakers, where lies their fascination.
